Supporting Emergency Service workers through building stronger mindsets

Module 5 – Lesson 4: Removing the stigma

WHAT is in this lesson?

This lesson discusses the issue of PTSD (Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder) and the effects of accumulative exposure within the role of an Emergency Service worker, including vicarious trauma, and life pre & post trauma exposure.

The issues of stigma, perfection, stereotypes, shame, are discussedas well as ways to help decrease the stigma of mental illness within the industry.

WHY is it important?

Too many Emergency Service officers worldwide – are struggling with PTSD, and too many are resulting to suicide.

By talking about the possible effects of accumulative stress (such as PTSD), and giving people an understanding of it; my hope is that we can become more supportive of those officers who are suffering so that they don’t feel more isolated than they already do.

It can truly happen to any one of us!
